Is there a footprint naming convention change for SOT23 packages?

When I update any existing package in my library, it asks me to update the footprint name when saving back to library and changes the name.

For example, SOT23-3P50_160X90L22X22 changes to SOT23-P50_160X90L22X22.

I see that with every SOT23 package in my library (20+ items).

I have not tried others.

The new IPC-7351 Land Pattern Naming Convention pushed the Pin Qty from the end of the Footprint Name to the beginning.

So, SOT23-3 or SOT23-5 or SOT23-6 or SOT23-8 is the common pin qty of the SOT23.

The P95, P65 & P50 is the Pin Pitch - 0.95 mm or 0.65 mm or 0.50 mm pitch.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the quick reply. Just so that I am clear, SOT23-3P50 now becomes SOT23-P50? The "3" before the P50 goes away? The new footprint name I am getting is "SOT23-P65_210X110L32X32" and it does not have the pin number in it at all. How do I tell if it is a 3P vs 6P vs 8P?

Is this change new to 2019.02?

The Land Pattern Footprint Naming convention was updated in Library Expert V2017.

Look in this folder on your computer -
C:\Program Files (x86)\PCB Libraries\Library Expert 2019\Documents

You will see these very important documents -
  • Library Expert Land Pattern Naming Convention.pdf
  • Library Expert Surface Mount Families.pdf
  • Library Expert Through-hole Families.pdf
  • Library Expert Solder Joint Goal Tables.xlsx
  • PCB_Library_Expert_SMD_Reference_Calculator.zip
  • PCB_Library_Expert_PTH_Reference_Calculator.zip

Hi Tom,

I'm also seeing the pin number disappear from the SOT23 parts in v2019.
This means that the same land pattern is called for either 3, 5 or 6 pin parts with the same geometry.

I cannot use this approach as my CAD library wants to over-write the files (as they are all the same name) and my CAD package will fail as there is the same land pattern for 3/5/6 pin parts...

Reverting back to v2018 until this is corrected.
