There are many variations that could potentially create a Footprint. Plated holes, Non-plated holes and surface mount pads could all be used in a single Footprint. Instead of entering component dimensional numbers into a "standard" template, in the near future we're going to be releasing an interactive "Package Editor" which will allow users to create the physical package and identify if the hole is plated or non-plated and identify the lead style (gull wing, J-lead, flat, etc.). This data will be stored in a .pkg file. Once you define the component package, everything to generate the Footprint is automated per IPC Rules or User Rules. The first component family to be added to the "Package Editor" will be Through-hole Connectors. This will add over 50,000 connectors to the Footprint Expert output. One step further than the "Package Editor" is the "Footprint Editor" which will allow interactive graphic editing to allow the user to draw in the component manufacturer recommended pattern pads and component outline and automate all the drafting lines and ref des. The new "Package and Footprint Editors" will be available in the V2013 release.
