I'm running 2017.06

I created a QFP and unchecked the "Add Fiducials" checkbox and the part is created without fiducials.  If I go back and double-click that part in the Library Editor window, the fiducials are now visible.

Preferences > Component Families > QFP > Local Fiducials > Add Fiducials when Pitch is Less Than __?

Same with BGA's.

Understood but maybe I am wrong in assuming that the "Add Fiducials" checkbox is an override?  If it is not, what purpose does it serve?

If you have the Preferences set to a low value and you want to add Local Fiducials to a custom part you select the Add Fiducials button and Save to FPX and the Fiducials are saved in the FPX file until you unselect the box and resave the data to FPX.

By default, the Local Fiducials are not saved in the FPX file because they are automatically inserted by Preferences.

But if the fiducials do not appear and you turn them on, that means you want to override Preferences and save to FPX will store them.

I see ... so "Add Fiducials" is only an override to add them, not remove them.

Correct
