When I am placing components I like to have a ref des in the geometric centre of the component and turn silkscreen off to minimize clutter.

The export to Altium includes a ref des on layer 16 which does this but it would also be handy if the ref des also appeared on the silkscreen and not in the geometric centre in this case.

Can this be done and if so how please?

As a specific customization, what it sounds like is you would need to get into and use a post process script to fix up the output to your liking. You're going to have to get into Altium Scripting to do it though, turn on Use Post Process Script checkbox in the translator, and provide that script to Altium to be run every time after a script is run.

This sounds like the componentname2 output that CADSTAR has in the LEP. Embarrassed

I'm referring to the fact he wanted to shift the ref des away from the geometric center. The Altium script should already be setup to handle two refdes's. Simply set the layers.
