Hey Tom,

Quick moment to thank you for all of the resources you provide to us! It has really helped me in understanding some of the IPC standards and what they are all about.

Anyway, one of the resources you provide us is the IPC Solder Joint Goal Tables (SJGT) in one of the Excel Files.

I noticed that in PCB Libraries most of your SOTs use the Gullwing SOT SJGT.

So, what is the point of the Outward L SJGT?

In your excel file, you have it pictured with a SOT23-8, but in the software, all of the SOTs just use the Gullwing SJGT instead of the Outward L Lead SJGT.

Is it remanent of past IPC 7351 standards?

Yes, there is a footnote in the IPC-7351B gullwing lead table for Outward L-bend.

The Outward L-Bend is when the gullwing lead does not have an angled lead. The terminal lead comes out of the component and goes straight down and then bends flat.

SOTs use this lead form a lot and there's a built in formula for calculating the difference between an Outward L and Gullwing terminal lead. The main difference between the two terminal leads is the "Heel" goal is smaller in the Outward L-Bend.

The Excel spreadsheet "Footprint Expert Solder Joint Goal Tables" is derived from IPC J-STD-001.
