When I try to change my Avatar, it complains that the password is invalid. I am not trying to change the password, though the forum seems to assume that I am and that I am setting it to an empty string...

Please just re-enter your current and "new" password (use the same one if you want in this case). In addition to the current/new password, it may also ask for your name...
This is a hiccup that will get resolved once the 'real' registration is completed and everything's migrated over. Apologies for the inconvenience.
