When creating a multi-row header, it is common to see alpha-numeric pin label assignments based on rows and columns (i.e. A1, B1, C1, A2, B2, C2, etc.). The part librarian generally gets this right when you select alpha-numeric and the correct sequence. However, it is also common to skip certain alpha chars that are easily confused with numerals such as 'I', 'O', 'Q', etc. Likewise, pin labels do not always start with 'A1'.
I find no way to start a labeling sequence with the alpha-numeric designator I choose and to skip the easily confused ones. There seems to be no way to directly edit the pin labels after they have been assigned either. Simply giving us a way to edit the pin labels would be a reasonable solution to all of these things. When I right click on a pin, I get a popup checkbox menu that seems to suggest selection of pins, labels, text, etc. but for what purpose? Doesn't seem to be anything I can do with the labels. |

This is a worthwhile suggestion.
For now, and for more flexibility, create headers with the Footprint Designer.
On the 'Pins' tab: When Adding pins the 'Alpha' text box can be used to set the starting alphanumeric character manually. After that it increments automatically, according to the 'Ordering Options' setup, whenever pins are added. In the 'Numbering Options' group box there is a 'Use JEDEC Alpha.' check box which, when checked (which it is by default), will automatically increment the alphanumeric pin number character in compliance with the JEDEC standard that skips the "I", "O", "Q", "S" & "X" characters. Unchecking this box allows the use of all characters. There is also a 'Step' option that will automatically skip pin numbers if desired. Pin Names may also be manually changed after they've been placed by selecting the pin and right-clicking to select 'Properties'. In the properties dialog box you can directly edit the pin name. There are several videos on our Forum that demonstrate the features available in the Footprint Designer. |
