I live/work in Atlanta, GA. I was curious to see what was required to obtain certification.
What's a poor boy to do?

Since as per my experience in the Industry i feel CID (Certified Interconnect Designer-Basic) and CID+ (Advanced) are valuable professional credentials recognized throughout the electronics industry. This is because designer certifications builds a foundation in design decision-making and practical application of IPC standards. Also, I must say here that CID is a great way to be recognized for understanding the standards behind electronic design and manufacturing. It is valid for 2 years also as other courses of IPCs.
