Hello!

There is no connector category in Surface Mount section. Headers and receptacles are supported only for Through-Hole components types.

Do you plan to add SMT headers and receptacles support in Footprint Expert?

Currently the only way to generate such land patterns is to use SOIC or SOFL component types. But this component types provide wrong package dimensioning for the SMT headers.

Build all Connectors in "Designer".

SMD, PTH, Hybrid. Any type of Connector.

Let us know if you want a webcast showing you how to do that.

We don't need Footprint Expert and its Designer to create custom footprints, this task could be perfectly accomplished with internal CAD footprint editor. The main goal of using Footprint Expert is to get footprints complying IPC standard requirements, but how this could be achieved if we almost arbitrary place package pins in Footprint Expert Designer? What is the difference between using the Footprint Expert Designer and an internal CADs footprint editor in this case?

But may be I'm missing something and I would be very appreciated to get a webcast showing how to generate proper custom footprints with regard to the IPC standard requirements.

We always use the manufacturer recommended footprint dimensions to build all FP Designer footprints.

If I'm creating footprint for SOIC I use manufacturer provided package/pins dimensions, padstacks and their placements are calculated by Footprint Expert. And I suppose this is the right way, cause in many cases manufacturer's recommended footprint is far from IPC requirements. And I thought, that exactly the same applies to the connector footprints. F.e. through-hole manufacturer's recommended connector footprints in many cases have too large hole sizes, than recommended by IPC standard, so I prefer the FPE calculated padstacks over manufacturer's recommended ones.

This is why I'm wondering to have automated ability to generate SMD connectors footprints by the means of Footprint Expert.

For surface mount connectors, many times the manufacturer does not provide the terminal lead dimensions and the Terminal Lead Form is not approved by IPC because it's a non-standard package that IPC does not have Toe, Heel and Solder joint goals for.

I can create any surface mount connector in FP designer in less than 5 minutes.

You can also order the part through www.pcblibraries.com/POD and we'll build the connector footprint for $10 regardless of the complexity.

You can also search www.pcblibraries.com/POD to see if the surface mount connector is available to download with your POD Subscription.
